U8 Warriors SwimWith Sharks, Get Bitten 4-1
The GC Warriors hosted the Roslyn Sharks this past weekend, on a cold, rainy morning at Stewart field. The Sharks seemed more comfortable in the water than the Warriors, getting out to an early 2-1 lead, and ultimately winning the rain-shortened game 4-1. The wet grass kept nearly every ball in the infield, but despite the conditions there were some bright spots for the Warriors. On offense, Joey Perinni slugged a double to bring in Evan Jozkowski for the Warriors only run, and the Warriors defense capitalized on opportunities to make good plays. John Murphy ran down an extra base hit in center, getting the ball in quickly to Patrick Creaven, who threw to Tommy Powderly at third, trapping the batter in a run down between second and third. Tommy then threw back to Patrick covering second, who tagged the runner out. Later in the game the Sharks tried a suicide squeeze play, but John Murphy at catcher jumped on the bunt and got back to the plate in time to tag out the Shark runner trying to score from third. This was the first time in the season the Warriors faced either a run down or a squeeze play, and they executed both beautifully. The umpire called the game early when the rain started in earnest, and so went the Warriors' chance to mount a late inning comeback. The Warriors remain in the hunt for a playoff spot in their league, but need to play well over the next couple of weeks and close out the season strong. Good luck Warriors!
