Third graders in Mrs. Meredith Petry's class at the Stewart School were treated to dramatic poetry readings by Regent Tilles on April 2nd. Roger Tilles, Long Island representative to the New York State Board of Regents, Chair of NYS's Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID), and well known for his philanthropic work in support of arts and education, toured the Garden City Public Schools early last month.

After meeting with Board of Education members, central office administrators, building principals and PTA representatives in the Administration Building for an informative discussion of a NYS Regent's role in state education policy-making and oversight, and what is on the horizon for education from Albany, the Regent travelled with Superintendent of Schools Dr. Robert Feirsen and Board of Education trustee Mrs. Angela Heineman to attend a morning performance of Stratford School's musical, Beauty and the Beast.

The Stewart School was Regent Tilles' next stop where he visited Mrs. Meredith Petry's third grade class to share some of his favorite poems. The students were clearly enthralled with the Regent's dramatic readings, and applauded and thanked him for paying a special visit to their classroom.

Garden City Public Schools would like to thank Regent Roger Tilles for taking time out of his busy schedule to meet with BOE members, administrators, and PTA members and to visit with the children of the district's elementary schools.
