Peter Bee On Wednesday evening, May 27, at the Inn at New Hyde Park, the Mineola-Garden City Rotary Club will hold its 18th annual Community Service Award Dinner in honor of two distinguished Garden City residents: the Honorable Peter A. Bee, Immediate Past Mayor of the Village of Garden City, and Dr. Robert A. Scott, esteemed president of Adelphi University. Both honorees will be recognized for their dedication and volunteer contributions to the Village of Garden City.

The Mineola-Garden City Rotary Club's Community Service Award was established in 1991 to honor Maurice Kirby, a dedicated Village Trustee and a great Rotarian in order to recognize his spirit of volunteerism and commitment. This recognition alternates each year between recipients from Mineola and Garden City. Both Peter Bee and Dr. Robert Scott exemplify the meaning of this prestigious award.

A life-long resident of Garden City, Peter Bee grew up in the Village along with his three brothers, William, Edward and Robert. Deeply rooted here, both Peter's parents, William and Jane Bee, as well as his grandparents, Edward and Gertrude Purcell, were former residents. Peter Bee's dedication, commitment and contributions to the Village and beyond over many years are well-documented. Peter has served the Village of Garden City as Trustee since 1993 and was a School Board Trustee from 1988-91. This past April, he completed his 2-year term as Mayor. During his 16-year tenure, Peter has served as Commissioner of Fire, Police, Public Works, Building and Finance. He also served as chairman of Recreation and Cultural Affairs. Peter's service within the Eastern Property Owners' Association (EPOA) before becoming a trustee included posts as a director, president and chairman of the Joint Conference of POAS. He had also served as a member of both the 7-member and 10-member Nominating Committees. Peter Bee has served as President of the Garden City Republican Club, Secretary of the Kiwanis Club of Garden City and was a long-time member of the Board of Trustees, Molloy College. He had served as Deputy County Attorney from 1977-1980. In 2005, the Garden City Chamber of Commerce named Peter "Citizen of the Year."

Dr. Robert Scott
Dr. Robert Scott Peter Bee is a partner in the law firm of Bee Ready Fishbein Hatter & Donovan, LLP located in Mineola where his concentration is in management labor/employment law. He is the immediate past president of the LI Chapter of the National Labor and Employment Relations Association; is a past chairman of the Labor Law Committee of the Nassau County Bar Association, and is a frequent guest lecturer at various professional associations. Peter and his wife, Marianne have a daughter Victoria, age 13 and two grown daughters, Elizabeth and Katharine.

Dr. Robert A. Scott was appointed by the Adelphi University Board of Trustees as the ninth president and professor of anthropology and sociology in July of 2000. Under his leadership, Adelphi has embarked on an historic construction project that has added new centers for recreation, sports, performing arts, early childhood education, and student housing to the Garden City campus. Dr. Scott has brought an unprecedented focus on alumni reengagement, and created a new home for the fine arts.

Over the last nine years, Dr. Scott has built on Adelphi's rich traditions in undergraduate and graduate education and has been the driving force behind Adelphi's development as a pioneering private university, drawing upon the liberal arts tradition of a small, personalized education, while also offering nationally-recognized professional programs. A good neighbor since 1929, Adelphi has graced the heart of the Village with its magnificently appointed campus, and through Dr. Scott's leadership, the university's opportunities for teaching, learning and service have been greatly enriched and his contributions to the Garden City community are well-documented.

In keeping with his vision of Adelphi as the "engaged" university, Dr. Scott has helped the University deepen its ties with Garden City and the Long Island community. On-campus cultural events, ranging from timely lectures to art exhibitions plus music and dance and theatre performances, bring alumni and area residents onto campus. He has also involved Adelphi faculty, students and the broader community in addressing pressing community issues. Dr. Scott himself is a model of community involvement, writing for Long Island Business News and serving on the boards of the Long island Association, the Regional Plan Association, and Global Kids, Inc., among others. Dr. Scott is the only American to serve in the three top posts in higher education; head of an independent university (Adelphi); a public institution (Ramapo College); and a state higher education coordinating agency (New Jersey and Indiana). Among Dr. Scott's numerous awards, is the tribute to him as recipient of the "Community Achievement Award" in 2004 by the Garden City Chamber of Commerce.

The Mineola-Garden City Rotary Club commends both Peter Bee and Dr. Robert Scott for their exemplary contributions to the Village of Garden City and proudly salutes them as recipients of the Community Service Award.
