On April 17, the Garden City branch of AAUW Diversity Study Group hosted a program on homelessness. The speaker was Shannon Boyle, MSW, Executive Director of New Ground.

AAUW has a project which is called "One Woman At A Time." This program involves adopting a family and providing them with holiday gift baskets and other needed items. This year's family was referred to us from New Ground.

New Ground's mission is to eliminate homelessness by eliminating the root causes of homelessness. New Ground not only gives support but they teach their clients the skills necessary to function independently.

Some of the services New Ground provides are Interfaith Network housing, remedial reading and tutoring to both adults and children to enable them to achieve their educational goals; vocational counseling, budget counseling and training skills of daily living such as negotiating systems so as better to meet their needs.

The greatest gift one can give other people is to help them to help themselves. New Ground does this by empowering their clients to break the cycle of homelessness.

New Ground is located at Fulton Avenue, Hempstead.
