Second graders are intent to hear Sacagawea's story
Second graders are intent to hear Sacagawea's story Carrying on a long tradition, the sixth graders presented their "Living Legends" projects last week to fellow students, parents and friends. The classes work in school for several months on this project. The goal is to teach them how to write a research report from start to finish. They start with a thesis statement, create note-cards, organize their information into an outline, put together a rough draft and finally a finished research report complete with visual aids. They are graded and given feedback at each step along the way. On the final day, they dress up as their character and deliver 5- minute presentations throughout the day and evening to each group of interested spectators that visits their station. This year's chosen "legends" included distinguished representatives of many field and periods in history including: Sally Ride, Julia Childs, Winston Churchill, Alexander the Great, Steve Jobs and Louis Braille. In addition to an in depth study of a famous individual, the students gain so much from this project including: research skills, time management, responsibility, organization, and public speaking skills. Their teachers Laura Delbene and Michelle Zucaro put forth a great deal of effort in leading them to the finish line. All involved were quite pleased with the final outcome.
