Cultural Food Presentation At Stewart School

2009-04-17 / School

On April 6th, Mrs. April Cornachio's fourth grade Spanish students at the Stewart School attended a special cultural presentation focused on their current thematic unit of food study presented by parent Mrs. Patricia Megale. Mrs. Megale, a native of Honduras, spoke to the children about the kinds of foods she ate while growing up in her country. She explained that there were no fast food chains at that time. The emphasis was on healthy, fresh and local foods such as tropical fruits, fish, rice, beans and corn. Mrs. Megale described typical meals such as breakfast, snacks and holiday meals, as well as her personal favorites. This presentation was especially meaningful to the fourth graders as they have been describing their favorite meals in Spanish class and were familiar with much of the vocabulary the guest speaker used. Students came away with a greater sense of not only the foods of the region, but that each Spanish-speaking country is unique and has its own food and cultural traditions.
