This past Saturday the GC Xtreme entertained the West Islip Shooting Stars. In a very rare occurrence, the Xtreme got themselves involved in a shoot out with the visitors. Six goals were scored in the first half due to a howling wind. The team found themselves two goals behind at halftime and came out in the second half going full throttle to try to equalize the match. In the end, the Xtreme could only muster up one-second half goal and lost the match 4-3.
The match did produce three spectacular and important goals for the home team. At the eleven-minute maker, with the Xtreme down 1-0, Lauren Miesemer got possession and played a through ball to a sprinting Joanna Sokolovic. Joanna out raced the west Islip back line and had a break away on goal. As the keeper came to the top of the 18-yard box, Joanna wisely pushed the ball past her and slipped the ball into the empty net. It was a brilliant goal that energized her team. Down by two goals due to a swift wind in their face, the Xtreme need a goal badly. The Xtreme came through again when a hustling Kristin Adams won a 50/50 ball in the middle and played Kelsey Whitney into the corner. There, Kelsey went an awesome pass into the penalty area where Isabel McKewon ran onto the ball and drive it perfectly into the corner of the goal. The xtreme were pumped up and back in the match for sure. The team got assistance from the wind in the second half and kept the Shooting Stars under constant pressure. At the nineteen minute mark, Shannon Tierney skillfully chipped a ball into the 18- yard box. After a scramble for possession, Lauren out muscled everyone and blasted the ball over the keeper's head for a thrilling goal. Eleven minutes remaining and it was a one-goal game. The Xtreme went forward with everything they had but just couldn't muster another goal before the final whistle blew. It was a great match and an incredible effort by the home team.
