The international bestseller Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress by Dai Sijie will be the selection for a book discussion, which will be moderated by Gloria Weinrich, on Wednesday, May 13th at 10 AM. This enchanting novella describes the experiences of two boys who are sent to the country for reeducation during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. The lives of the 17 year old narrator and his best friend Luo take an unexpected turn when they meet the beautiful daughter of a local tailor and stumble upon a forbidden stash of Western literature. The story shows both the resilience of the human spirit as well as the magical power of storytelling.
The book discussion moderated by Mrs. Weinrich will take place in the Library's small meeting room on the Lower Level and is limited to 20 participants. No registration is necessary. Copies of the book are available at the reference desk in the Library. This event is sponsored by The Friends of The Garden City Library.
