Art Dept. Hears About Alaska
L-R: R Emilie Sair, 1st Vice President of the Community Club Al Urban, and Garden Dept. Chairlady, Muriel Urban. Released by Muriel Urban The Garden Dept. and the Art Dept. of the Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead recently joined forces to present a program on "The Ring of Fire" by Alfred Urban. They had a wonderful turnout and the program was very well received. The members and their guests all enjoyed the pictures and the information on what they were seeing as well as the touch of humor that was used.
The lecture started in Anchorage, Alaska and continued on to Kodiak, Kiska, and Attu Islands and from there through the Bering Sea to the Kamchatka Peninsula and the City of Petropavlosk in Siberia. "The Ring of Fire" refers to the volcanic activity surrounding the Pacific Ocean.
Welcoming members at the door that day were Veronica Witt and Jane Ovsen. Greeting the guests was Mary Gagliardo. The pourers for the day were Lillian LaPlac and Ruth Lacy.
Art Dept. Chairlady Renate Rego-Monteiro provided the Refreshments and Garden Dept. Chairlady Muriel Urban provided the Coffee and Tea service as well as the table decorations. These included a Brass Samovar with tray and Tea cup dating back to the Russian Czars, along with several items on a tray that illustrated the things found in Alaska - a carved Seal, Sea Otter, Walrus and Totem Pole along with a floral piece reflecting the color of the Sea Ice. Part two of this program will be presented by the Garden Dept. in November and it will deal with the Gardens of Japan.
