L. Arthur (Art) Sobel
L. Arthur (Art) Sobel, 82, of Scottsdale, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family March 23, 2009. He was born in New York City, New York, May 16, 1926 and spent most of his adult life in Garden City, New York and Scottsdale, Arizona. His beloved wife of fifty-seven years, Ruth Cain Sobel pre-deceased him in 2002. Art served in the U.S. Navy during World War II followed by a sixty-plus year career in the insurance casualty and property industry ranging from positions as a manager, corporate agent, and independent broker- business owner. Art was an active leader in community activities serving as a long time and founding member and President of the Garden City Historical Society, 1977-1979, President of the Garden City Community Fund, 1975-1977, and Manager in the Garden City Little League, 1968-1970. Following his move to Arizona in 1986, Art joined the Central Arizona Chapter of CPCU, chaired numerous CPCU committees and taught courses on management, ethics and public relations. He served as President from 1991-1992. Art is survived by his devoted family; son, Arthur Robert; daughter, Saundra and her husband William G. Johnson; daughter Patricia and her husband Paul Stanton. Grandchildren include Todd Rea and his wife Zeny; Laura Johnson and Matthew Stanton; great-grandchildren Sara and Thomas Rea. Services and burial will be held Friday March 27, 2009 at Christ Church of the Ascension, 4015 E. Lincoln Drive, Paradise Valley, AZ, 85253. Carl A. Schwarz
Carl A. Schwarz, a 35-year resident of Garden City, who most recently lived on Cathedral Avenue in Hempstead, died on March 11th. He was 72 years old.
Mr. Schwarz was a labor, employment and benefits attorney. He graduated from St. John's Preparatory School in 1953, Fordham College in 1957 and Fordham Law School in 2006. He was a captain in the U.S. Air Force, and a Judge Advocate General and officer liaison to NATO in France from 1961-64.
Mr. Schwarz was also a Knight of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, and led relief efforts in Haiti, served the sick on pilgrimages to Lourdes and was active in the organization's leadership.
He was a partner in the law firms Finley, Kumble & Wagner, and Lord, Day & Lord in New York City and Schwarz & DeMarco LLP in Garden City. He was counsel to pension and benefit funds, hospitals, and educational and cultural institutions.
Mr. Schwarz was a board member of Catholic Charities, chairman of the board at New York School of Interior Design and commodore at the Manhasset Bay Yacht Club. Mr. Schwarz was a Eucharistic Minister and Lector at St. Joseph's Church and a member of the church's Pastoral Advisory Council.
He is survived by his wife Maryellen McGoldrick, son Peter, daughter Elizabeth, son-in-law Gregory Boison, pride and joy granddaughter Willow Anne, and three sisters: Bernadette Modica, Mary Leggette and Rosalie Edes.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Bishop William Murphy at St. Joseph's Church in Garden City on March 14th. The Mass was concelebrated by Frs. Joseph M. Schlafer and Brian J. Ingram from St. Joseph's, Msgr. John Gilmarten from St. Anne's Church and Msgr. Francis J. Caldwell from St. Martha's Church in Uniondale. Interment followed at St. Charles Cemetery.
