A Word From The Publisher

2009-03-27 / Letters

In a meeting notice which appeared in last week's issue, a reference was made to "reports of heroin on Seventh Street" with no further information about the "reports" given. Naturally, that reference raised great concern for several readers who contacted us, and our readers deserve more information.

According to the Garden City Police Department, there have been no formal reports of heroin activity on Seventh Street. Instead, the mother of a teen came into the department and discussed her concerns about heroin on Seventh Street with them. However, according to the police department, the mother did not have first hand knowledge and would not allow her child to be interviewed by detectives. The police say they investigated the limited information they were given and believe that it is unfounded. The police urge that if anyone has information about drugs in the Village they contact the department.

We have to apologize for the editing of that notice. In all honesty, it really got by us, and it shouldn't have. We get over 1000 pieces of email a week, and although we read everything that ends up in the paper, apparently sometimes we read better than others.

We should have questioned the accuracy of the reference before it was published, not after. While we are all for the eradication of drugs, and are truly scared by the rise in arrests for heroin among youth on Long Island, there is no place for unfounded rumors of this sort in the paper.
