Mary Varnell Hughes
Mary Varnell Hughes, who lived in Garden City for almost fifty years, died on March 21st at age 83. Born on August 29, 1925, Mary grew up in Texas and received her Bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Texas at Austin. During World War II, she met Charles Hughes, who was serving as an army dentist in El Paso. The couple embarked on a very happy marriage in February of 1946, which lasted 61 years until Chuck's death in 2007.
Mary and Chuck began their life together in Levittown, NY and then moved to Garden City, where they raised their two sons, Bob and Richard. Besides giving Chuck administrative help with his dental practice, Mary became involved in numerous volunteer activities from Cub Scouts to the high school scholarship fund, with which she was actively associated for a number of years.
Mary and Chuck were both avid and very capable bridge players, and they shared many other interests, including playing golf, bird watching and traveling. They formed some wonderful friendships, including a very special one with Bill and Betty Hinman. Mary adored children and animals and relished the beauties of nature. She was especially proud of her Texas heritage. She always kept more than a hint of her Texas accent, and she never quite got used to northern winters.
Mary is survived by her sons Bob and Richard, her grandchildren Rob and Kat, her sister Janice Cole, and her daughter-in law Betsy. A very sweet, soft-spoken, and gentle lady who retained her blue-eyed beauty until the end, she will be greatly missed.
The family would welcome hearing from old friends and acquaintances c/o Bob Hughes, 96 Weskora Avenue, Pleasantville, NY 10570. Memorial contributions to the Alzheimer's Association would also be greatly appreciated.
