In Memoriam Piero M. de Luise, M.D.
Piero M. de Luise, M.D., 88, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2009. A long time resident of Garden City, Piero was born in Casamicciola, Ischia, Italy. He was a graduate of the University of Rome School of Medicine and on the anesthesiology staff of South Nassau Communities Hospital from 1961 to 1985. He leaves his wife Olga, his children Vincent, Alexandra and Cynthia, and five grandchildren. "Bibliophile, calligrapher, conservationist, Darwinist, environmentalist, evolutionist, gardener, gastronome, humanist, linguist, mariner, naturalist, numismatist, philatelist, photographer, physician, and world-traveler, you have enriched our lives with your passion for knowledge and ardent respect for nature. We will always hold you deep in our hearts." Christopher Anthony Zappulla Christopher A. Zappulla died on February 23rd following a long and courageous battle with lymphoma, which spread to his brain. He was 43 years old. Mr. Zappulla was born and raised in Garden City. He graduated from Chaminade High School in 1983 with highest honors and Tufts University in Medford, MA, majoring in comparative literature. Before beginning a career in the law, he lived at 45, Gouvion-Sainte-Cyr in Paris for six years, writing and publishing for Mideast Magazine and El Pais in Madrid, Spain. Mr. Zappulla returned to earn his law degree from the Benjamin Cardozo School of Law in Manhattan. As an intern at Remy-Amerique Inc., he rose to become general counsel for the firm, one of the youngest such in the country. In 2004, he took a new position in corporate law for The Allen Systems Group in Naples, FL. He savored life and died with the dignity and grace for which he was known always. His passions were his books, horticulture, long walks and above all, his music. He leaves behind two children he cherished most, Julian Anthony, 6, and Gabby, 3; his beloved mother, Patricia Grady Zappulla; his sister, Cathleen Zappulla Burden of Chicago; uncles, Dr. F. Patrick Grady, Robert and Carmen Zuppulla; aunts, Gillian Grady, Josephine Visicaro and Kathleen Sigg Grady; cousins, Kevin P. Grady of Concord, MA, creative director of Lemon Magazine, Jessica, Colin and Frank Grady; and nieces and nephews who loved him greatly. He was predeceased by his father, Anthony Zappulla, on Dec. 2, 2007. He was proud of his dad, who had begun his own career carrying a tool bag as a repairman, rising to become a senior executive at IBM Corporation for 35 years. A funeral Mass was said on Feb. 26 at St. William Roman Catholic Church in Naples, FL.
