Middle School Recognized As "Superior"

Dentist Visits Stewart School
      In February, Dr. Stacey Reynolds, a pediatric dentist, visited Miss Ashley Cole's third grade class at the Stewart School for National Children's Dental Health Month. Dr. Reynolds taught students the importance of brushing, flossing, and eating healthy. She showed students what healthy teeth look like, as well as what can happen if you do not care for your teeth.

New Teacher Staff Development Workshop
      On Thursday, February 5th, the fifth in a series of monthly workshops for Garden City Public Schools first year teachers took place. Dr. Bruce Torff (seated in center), a noted professor of education at Hofstra University, presented the workshop on the topic of Differentiated Instruction.

School Board Meetings
      The Garden City Board of Education will conduct a Budget/Regular Work Session on Tuesday, March 10, at 8:15 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. Topics will include Final Adjustments to the 2009-2010 Budget and an updated presentation by the Ad hoc Committee on Facilities and Grounds.

A Spanish Fashion Show
      Seventh grade students in Senora Porter's Spanish classes at Garden City Middle School recently put on a fashion show. This activity was the culmination of their three week study of clothing and colors in Spanish. Students were told to invent an identity for their model. They then had to think of an interesting outfit to model for the class.

Selected As Student Ambassador
      Nicholas Genovese, Garden City High School 9th grade student, has been accepted into the People to People teen ambassador Leadership Program. Nicholas will join a select group of student delegates from Nassau and Suffolk Counties, and other states around the country. They will travel from England to France and Italy will to explore European Culture, and its impact on American culture.

GCHS Sponsoring Blood Drive
      On Thursday, March 12, from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m., Garden City High School will be sponsoring a Blood Drive in the high school gymnasium. The donation of one pint of blood takes just a few minutes, but can save up to three lives. Please consider attending this worthwhile event.

      What happens when you combine a bunch of crapshooters with a mission group determined to put an end to illegal gambling? Will Sky Masterson, an infamous gambler, be able to take the leader of this mission group, Sarah Brown, on a date to Cuba to win a bet? And will Nathan Detroit finally be able to commit himself to marry Adelaide, his fiancé of fourteen years?

Middle School Students Selected To Prestigious Orchestras
      Based on auditions, fourteen young musicians from Garden City Middle School have been selected to play in orchestras outside of school. All of the orchestras maintain very high admission standards, and are considered outstanding. "These are the most prestigious orchestras that students can gain acceptance to," commented music teacher, Mrs. Margaret Gullotta (pictured, at left).

The Birth of Stewart School Presented To Library
      On February 11, twenty-one former Stewart School Quest students presented hard-bound copies of The Birth of Stewart School to the Garden City Library and Stewart School Library. This book represents the entire award-winning research project which the students completed in 2007.

Irish Eyes Were Smiling
      There was a chill in the air, and a lot of wind, but it didn't stop Saint Anne's school from marching proudly in the Garden City St. Patrick's Day parade on Sunday. Over 100 students, band members, parents and teachers bundled up and accessorized their uniforms with lots of green and Irish wool. Their fingers and toes were numb, but they had smiles on their faces.
