Thursday, March 5th

Book Discussion 11 AM to 1 PM - Movie at 1:30PM

Sue Monk Kidd's The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of 14 year old Lily Owens, who is haunted by the memory of her late mother who died when she was only four. Lily and her caregiver Rosaleen journey to Tiburon, South Carolina, the town that holds the secret to her mother's past. There the two are taken in by three bee-keeping sisters. Set in the midst of the racial tensions of the 1960's, this acclaimed novel is an uplifting story, which shows the power of forgiveness and the strength of female friendship.

The book discussion, which will be moderated by Gloria Weinrich, will take place from 11 AM until 1 PM in the Library's small meeting room on the Lower Level and is limited to 20 participants. No registration is necessary. Copies of the book are available at the reference desk in the Library.

As an added bonus, residents are invited to enjoy the newly released film version of this novel at 1:30 PM on the same date. An all-star cast including Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, and Dakota Fanning bring the unforgettable characters to life. Both events are sponsored by The Friends of The Garden City Library.
