"Teens On The Job" Groundhog Shadow Day
For the twelfth year in a row, students from Garden City High School participated in the Mentoring Partnership of Long Island's Groundhog Shadow Day. This day provided an opportunity for high school sophomores to observe and share the daily responsibilities of an employee working in a career of interest to the student.
This year, five students from Garden City High School were selected for the out-of-district job shadowing experiences. Pictured here are (left to right): business teacher Mr. Gene Rochler who coordinated the event, and selected Garden City High School sophomores - Jaclyn Bingold, Elizabeth Galizia, Eleni Demiris, Katherine Smith, and Alexander Woinich.
"I never realized how hectic a guidance counselor's schedule was and what a great help they are to their students," commented Jaclyn Bingold who worked alongside a guidance counselor in Baldwin High School. Sophomores Eleni Demiris and Katherine Smith shadowed an English teacher in Lynbrook. "The personalities of the students are different from town-to-town," Eleni noted. "It was different to see a school from a teacher's perspective," commented Katherine. "It made the teachers seem more human to us." The final selected student, Alexander Woinich, spent his day working at Atlantis Marine World in Riverhead.
Mr. James McAleese, librarian at the Stewart School, also hosted students from other school districts who were participating in the annual teen mentoring program.
