William L. Fuller
William L. Fuller
William L. Fuller, 81, of Garden City, passed away on December 30, 2008. Loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and leader in the community, he was a role model and inspiration to everyone around him.
At Garden City High School, Bill earned 11 Varsity Letters (four in football and lacrosse, three in basketball). Bill was the captain of the football, basketball and lacrosse teams his senior year at Garden City. On the lacrosse team, he was a First Team All-Star Defenseman from 1944-1946 in the Metropolitan League. His team won the championship in 1945 and 1946. Bill received All-Scholastic Football honors in Nassau County and was a two-time All-County Tackle on the football team. The William L. Fuller award was established at Garden City High School in 1982, and is awarded annually to the top male and female athletes for outstanding leadership in athletics.
At Syracuse University, Bill switched to midfield and played under head lacrosse coach Roy Simmons, Sr. Bill was an All-American four times: Honorable Mention in 1947, Second Team in 1948 and First Team in 1949 and 1950. He received the Laurie Cox Trophy as the Most Valuable Player at Syracuse, and starred for the North in the North-South All-Star Game in 1950. Syracuse won the Division Championship in 1950. The senior midfield of Bill Fuller, George Cody and Bill Archbald of the 1950 Syracuse Orangemen is considered one of the all-time best in Division I Lacrosse history. Bill also participated in Syracuse Football whereby his End position coach was Roy Simmons, Sr. Bill received the Varsity Club of Syracuse University Letter Winner of Distinction Award on September 1, 1982.
Bill was elected to the National Intercollegiate Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1981.
Bill served as a Corporal in the Army from 1951 to 1953. After returning to Garden City, Bill was extremely involved in civic and church activities. Bill was an active Alumnus of Garden City High School whereby he served as President of The Men's Association (TMA) supporting athletes of the Garden City High School District. As President of the Men's Association, he organized Garden City High Schools' Lacrosse Day in 1979, 1980 and 1981, and sponsored High School and College double header lacrosse games. He coached his children's sports teams, and was usually on the sideline to support his children and grandchildren as they played football, lacrosse, basketball and soccer. Bill was also a member of the Cherry Valley Country Club.
Bill sat on the Board of Trustees with the Presbyterian Church in Garden City. Bill's parents Thamar and Raymond were part of the first membership class at the church on April 20, 1930. Bill was added to the Cradle Roll two days later. Bill served the church in almost every capacity as Elder, Youth Advisor, Adult Bible Studies Teacher and Board of Trustees Member. He was recently honored as a member of the Society of the Magi. Bill put his faith into action, giving freely of his time, talents and treasure to support the ministry of the church.
Bill was President of R.C. Fuller, Inc. dry milk products broker and diversified dairy products producer and distributor which was established in 1945 . Bill succeed his father Raymond Cyrus Fuller as principle of the business, and has been succeeded by his son, William L. Fuller, Jr.
Bill lived in Garden City, with his late beloved wife Camilla (Mimi). Bill is survived by his wife Katherine; three children Jenny, William and John; nine grandchildren and two great-grand children. Bill resided in Garden City on Sackville Road, Whitehall Boulevard and The Wyndham on Cherry Valley Road.
Henry Bangert:
Henry Bangert, beloved husband of Betty Bangert, passed away quietly at home on January 3rd. He was 87 years old. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, and niece Roberta Hering, Southhold, N.Y. He was born in Jamaica, December 30, 1921. He attended Andrew Jackson High School, in St. Albans, then N.Y.Y.
Henry was a Real Estate Broker. He retired from European American Bank, and was a veteran of World War II. He received a Bronze Star and several other medals. He belonged to the 10th Army Group, Tank Battalion 748, serving several armored infantries. He was a corporal and a medic, and also served in the Battle of the Bulge.
Henry has resided in Garden City for the past 46 years.
He loved and summered in Southhold since his childhood.
Andrew J. Raskopf
Andrew J. Raskopf passed away on January 1, 2009 of Amityville. Formerly of Garden City, he is survived by his loving partner, Kathleen. Cherished brother of Jerry, Paul, Tom, Veronica Studt, John, Maryann McKenna, Jay Meaney, Erin Brew, and Peter Meaney. Devoted uncle of 21 nieces and nephews and 7 great-nieces and great-nephews. Cremation at St. Michael's Crematory. The family was cared for by Thomas F. Dalton Funeral Home, Floral Park, NY. In lieu of flowers donations to Nassau County Firefighters Burn Center Foundation, P.O. Box 246, Levittown, NY. 11756.
Catherine McCann
Former Garden City resident Catherine Jayne McCann, age 87 of Scottsdale, AZ passed away on December 30, 2008. She was born in Queens, NY on December 4, 1921 and came to Scottsdale in 2005 from Sarasota, FL. Survivors are her beloved husband of 62 years, Joseph; brother Edward of Queensbury, NY; and 10 nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at at Our Lady of Joy Catholic Church in Carefree, AZ. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014 in her name. Arrangements entrusted to Messinger Pinnacle Peak Mortuary.
