Mr. Larry Tremsky, Organist and Choirmaster at the Cathedral of the Incarnation, has busily prepared the choirs for the Evensong for Epiphany. The Cathedral of the Incarnation will offer a special service of Choral Evensong for Epiphany on Sunday, January 11th at 4:00 p.m. This Evensong, sung by the Cathedral Choir of Men & Girls, will feature the Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis of the American composer Harold Friedell. The Magnificat (also known as the Song of Mary) is frequently sung (or spoken) liturgically during Evensong by churches in the Anglican Communion or during Vespers in the Roman Catholic tradition. The text is taken directly from the Gospel of Luke (Luke 1:46-55) where it is spoken by the Virgin Mary upon the occasion of her Visitation to her cousin Elizabeth. In the narrative, after Mary greets Elizabeth, who is pregnant with the future John the Baptist, the child moves within Elizabeth's womb. When Elizabeth praises Mary for her faith, Mary sings the Magnificat in response. The Nunc dimittis (also Song of Simeon or Canticle of Simeon) is a canticle from a text in the second chapter of Luke (Luke 2:29-32) named after its first words in Latin. Simeon was a devout Jew who, according to the book of Luke, had been promised by the Holy Ghost that he would not die until he had seen the Savior. When Mary and Joseph brought the baby Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem for the ceremony of consecration of the firstborn son, Simeon was there, and he took Jesus into his arms and uttered the words of the Nunc dimittis in which he prayed that he could depart the world in peace now that he had seen the Savior. The anthem Arise, shine, for your light has come by Leo Nestor, as well as Psalms and hymns sung by the entire congregation will complete the service. All are invited to come and enjoy this special Evensong to mark the end of Christmastide.
