Wilderness First Aid Course

Whether camping in the woods or just driving in a rural area, odds are that finding medical help in an emergency may be difficult. To help people prepare for those occasions, the American Red Cross in Nassau County is offering Wilderness First Aid training.

"This is really a must have course for anyone who spends a lot of their time outdoors, like Scouts or hunters," said Matt Crimmins, Health and Safety Director for the Nassau Red Cross. "But anyone can find themselves in a situation where help may be delayed and the actions taken can mean the difference between life and death."

Combining lectures and practical application, participants will learn how to prepare for trips to remote areas; learn how to identify injuries and apply first aid techniques; how to deal with an emotionally upset victim; and how to transport and evacuate an injured person.

The course is 16-hours long, with each session spread over four weeks. Session 1 will begin Feb. 5th and conclude March 5th. Session 2 will begin April 3rd and conclude May 1st. The cost is $125 and students must be at least 16 years of age.
