In Memoriam
Longtime Garden City resident Louis Schulz passed away on Saturday, December 27, at the age of 83. Louis was born on December 8, 1925, in New Orleans, Louisiana. After graduating from high school, he joined the Armed Forces, where he served as a Technician; 5th Grade, 9th Division; and clarinet player in the Army band during World War II. After the war, Louis worked for Oman-Farnsworth-Wright Contractors, where he supervised major public works projects in the Azores and Kabul, Afghanistan. He then relocated to New York City to assist with the construction of the McGraw Hill building.
In 1970, Louis married Jean Cappello Messina of New York City. Louis and Jean returned to New York, residing in Garden City, where he served as an active member of the American Legion, Post 264.
Louis is survived by his wife, Jean, his son, Vincent Messina of North Carolina, his daughter, Valerie Mashburn, and his grandchildren, Sabrina and Oliver Mashburn.
A viewing took place. on Tuesday, December 30, at Fairchild & Sons, 1201 Franklin Avenue, in Garden City. A funeral mass for Louis will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, December 31 at St. Joseph's Church, 130 5th Street, in Garden City. Internment will be at Holy Rood Cemetery, 111 Old Country Road, in Westbury, NY, following the ceremony.
