When A Baby Broadway Says Hello
"Broadway in its Infancy" will be discussed on DVD by Johns Hopkins Professor Bill Messenger at the Garden City Library on Friday, January 9th at 10a.m. This ongoing series on the history of the Broadway musical is presented by the Garden City Branch of AAUW in conjunction with the Friends of the Garden City Library. All members of the community are most welcome to enjoy these musical mornings which will continue monthly through May.
In the first lecture, Professor Messenger will look at the period from 1866 to 1908 and will open with one of the time's most popular songs, "Bicycle Built for Two." The morning's second part, "The Revue versus the Book Musical," explains a form of musical theater that does not even attempt to integrate the songs in a show with the plot.
