Xtreme Struck By Lightning

Jenna Codignotto races to win the ball
The U12 GC Xtreme traveled to HBC Soccer Park in Huntington this past Saturday. the host of the match was the HBC Lightning. The Xtreme have faced four difficult opponents this fall, but the Lightning was certainly the most talented and athletic team they have seen so far. The Xtreme put forth a great effort, but on this day the Lightning were quicker to the ball and won the match 2-0.

As the first half started, the Xtreme were under pressure. The Lightning had some large and quick midfielders that got control of t he middle third. Although under pressure, the Xtreme defense hung on. Sam Derby was in the goal and had charge of her defense. The HBC team attached the Xtreme defensive area on the outside, they had an ultra quick left forward that caught the team's attention immediately. Eight minutes into the half, the HBC team scored the first goal of the match. Instead of weltering under the pressure, the Xtreme fought back. Doing a better job winning the unprocessed balls, the team returned some pressure on the Lightning. using their speed upfront or making attacking runs from the outside, the Xtreme created some good scoring chances. unfortunately, the team didn't score and the half ended 1-0.

Alison Holfester sends the long ball
With Shannon Tierney as keeper in the second half, the Xtreme defense kept the match close with unyielding defensive play. On the offensive side, the Xtreme were increasing their attack minute by minute. With 10 minutes remaining, Deanna DiPierro sent in a well struck free kick that just missed the net by inches. Just as the Xtreme seemed close to scoring their first goal, the Lightning sealed the match with 9 minutes remaining with their second goal. The Xtreme fought to the final second, but came up short in this match.

It's back to HBC Soccer Park to play the HBC Wildcats this Saturday, The team looks forward to a better result.
