Garden City Library News COLLEGE PREP-3-PART SERIES A record number of students and/or their parents attended the workshops for college prep held by the Young Adult Department. All who were able to come out on a weekday night were glad that they did. Tips on writing the college essay and organizing the application package, filing the financial aid forms, and test taking strategies were priceless. Good luck to all on getting into the colleges of your choice! YAK & SNACK TO LAUNCH 2008 TEEN READ WEEK Registration began on Monday, September 22 for the first fall Yak & Snack in the Young Adult Department. The meeting will take place on Tuesday evening, October 13 at 7 PM. The date was chosen with Teen Read Week, which runs from October 12 through October 18, in mind. All in grades 6-12 are invited to come and share their favorite book and have a snack with the librarian and other YAs. The theme for Teen Read Week is "Books With Bite". Why not share your favorite book or the one you've just finished for that first book report while having a bite to eat? Remember, anything you have read is fine and eligible for a Teen 3 Apples Book Award nomination. 2008 TEEN READ WEEK CONCLUSION Registration begins Saturday, October 4 for "Edible Haunted Houses" program with Christine Rissanen. At this workshop Ms. Rissanen will teach the art of creating edible houses. To prepare for the Halloween season these houses will have spooky decorations. The workshop will be held on Saturday, October 18 at 3 PM as the conclusion to Teen Read Week. Register early as there is a limit of 20 participants. YAK & SNACK # 2 Registration will begin on Monday, October 6th for the Yak & Snack to be held on the eve of Election Day, November 3 at 7 PM. The book chosen for this meeting is Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. Not since Harry Potter has a book series been as popular as the Twilight Series. At Thanksgiving the movie is scheduled to be released. All YAs are invited to read or reread the book, come and talk with others about it, speculate on the movie, play some Twilight Trivia and have some refreshments. Books will be loaned to Yak & Snack participants only. BABYSITTING WORKSHOP Registration begins Tuesday, October 7 for the Young Adult Babysitting workshop. Those who attend both sessions will be awarded a certificate of completion. The first session First Aid/ Child Care will be held on Tuesday, October 28, from 3:45-5:45 PM. At this session led by two neonatal nurses from Winthrop University Hospital, the focus will be on the care and health of infants and young children. Participants are asked to bring a doll, Cabbage Patch size, to practice techniques of holding, feeding, diapering, and administering first aid under the guidance of the instructors. The second session the safety session will be led by Mr. Ed Fronckwicz, Assistant Superintendent of Recreation for the Village of Garden City and Detective Rich Pedone, Youth Bureau Garden City Police Department. This session will be held on Wednesday, November 5, from 3:45-5:15 PM. Their focus is on how to keep the children and the babysitter out of harm's way and how to deal with any unavoidable accident or incident should one occur. Please avoid disappointment by registering early for this very popular program. 2008-2009 THE TEEN 3 APPLES BOOK AWARD A NEW YORK STATE TEEN'S CHOICE AWARD Now is the time to nominate your favorite YA book to win The Teen 3 Apples Book Award. Nominations close on October 20th. There is a box on the cool curved wall of the YA room into which anyone in grades 6-12 may place the title and author of their favorite book in nomination. In November, the 15 titles with the greatest tally of nominations will be announced and placed on a ballot. All will have from November until April to READ, READ, READ those nominated titles and vote for their favorite. Voting deadline is April 20th. The winner will be announced on May 10, 2009. A raffle will be held on that day at the Garden City Public Library using nominations and votes as raffle tickets. DISCOVER THE YA COMPUTER CENTER Use the printing coupons won at the Back to School Bash at the new YA Computer Center which is up and running. The newly renovated Young Adult Room houses a Computer Center exclusive for those patrons in Grades 6-12. There are four computers at the west end of the YA Room as well as a laser printer and a sign up station for reserving the next available computer when all are in use. These computers are available during normal library hours unless no one is available to supervise. Using this computer will insure company of peers only. Each machine is equipped with Internet Explorer (always filtered), PowerPoint, Publisher, and Word. YA's who need Excel may use it in the Adult Computer Center on the Lower Level. As in the Adult Computer Center, there is a 3 hour limit for use per day, and a limit to 5 pages of free printing. Additional printing needs can be purchased or credited with Summer Reading Club certificates at the Circulation Desk for 5 cents per page. COMING ATTRACTIONS November 15th there will be a Scrapbooking workshop teaching participants how to make holiday themed pages for their memory books or scrapbooks. On December 3rd a third Yak & Snack is planned. The book will be Fever 1793, a work of historical fiction focusing on the yellow fever outbreak. On December 10th there will be the opportunity to learn the skill of Italic Calligraphy just in time to send out holiday cards. Don't get behind in classes. Are there some topics which need a little clarification? Have you tried Live Homework Help yet? Those who have used it, report that it is a life saver. The tutors are helpful and instructive. Frustration over a homework problem or understanding some classroom lesson is cured in less than a half an hour. Log on through the library's web site, simply use your library card number and you are on your way to solving those homework dilemmas.
