What's Up For Young Adults At The Library COLLEGE PREP-3-PART SERIES
The Young Adult Department has prepared a 3-part program for high school students and their parents to inform and prepare for the college search and admittance process. The first workshop "How to Write a Winning College Essay" scheduled for Wednesday, September 17 from 7 to 8:30 PM was in conflict with a Guidance Department meeting being held at the High School. Therefore we worked with Dr. Maloof and found a mutually convenient date and time to reschedule. THE NEW DATE IS MONDAY SEPTEMBER 22. "How to Write a Winning College Essay" will be facilitated by Dr. Martha Maloof. Dr. Maloof will share the secrets of writing a good college essay and the college application process. Those students who have begun the process are invited to bring a draft of an essay and have it critiqued. The program will be followed by a question and answer period. Registration began on September 2. Part 2 "Beat the High Cost of College" will be held on Wednesday, September 24. College Financial Aid Expert Barry Fox will be lecturing on the ways to obtain maximum college financial aid. He will give step by step advice on finding the best sources of aid, how to fill out the financial aid forms, how to negotiate with financial aid officers, eligibility for grants & loans, special family circumstances, New York State aid, and the best free websites for scholarship search. The program begins at 7 PM. There will be time for questions and answers following a 90 minute presentation. No registration is required. The following week on October 1st will be Part 3 on SAT preparation. Steve Rosner of Kaplan Test Prep will be on hand to give a workshop including practice tests, which will illustrate the format of the examination. Descriptions of strategies necessary for the greatest success on the test will be given. This program beginning at 7:30 will be followed by a Q&A period. Registration began on September 15th. TEENBOSS WORKSHOP Presenter Terry Parrett was unable to be at the Library on July 28th forcing a last minute cancellation. Anyone who was signed up for this program gets priority registration at the rescheduled workshop. Mr. Parrett will be at the Library on Saturday, September 20th, from 3-4:30 PM. As originally advertised, this workshop will explore how a young person can become a junior entrepreneur with tips on how to start, promote, and determine what to charge for goods and services offered in your business. All attendees will receive a CD-ROM packed with goal-setting and planning material, sample advertising and marketing pieces, ideas for different types of teen businesses and more. The workshop is limited to 30 participants. Registration began Monday July 14th.
