Community Club Presents "Songs America Voted By"

Musical Historian and Balladeer Linda Russell
On Wednesday October 1, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. at the Garden City Casino, The Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead will present musical historian and balladeer Linda Russell in a program entitled, "Songs America Voted By - Campaign Songs of the 19 th Century." As she traces our elections from Jefferson's victory song through the Whigs singing campaign of 1840, to the ragtime melodies of Teddy Roosevelt's presidency. Ms. Russell will give us a unique look at how voters got to know the candidates for political office in the days before mass media.

For thirty years Ms. Russell has explored America's past through song. She served as 18 th century balladeer at Federal Hall National Memorial in NYC and her performances are in demand at historic sites, schools and community centers around the country. New York venues have included Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and the Metropolitan Museum of Art's American Wing. She has also recorded eight albums of traditional and historical music including "Stephen Foster Songs," "The Good Old Colony Days" and songs of "Christmas Past." Please be sure to join us on October 1 st to meet Linda Russell and hear the stories of how political candidates in the past used music and song to communicate their ideas to potential voters.

This program which is free and open to the public, is made possible through the New York Council for the Humanities, a State affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
