Free Peripheral Artery Disease Screening & Lecture Winthrop-University Hospital's "Spirit of Women(r)" community education series will offer a free program, "Peripheral Artery Disease: How it Affects Your Heart" on Monday, September 15, 2008, at 6:30 PM. The program will be held at Winthrop's Community Outreach Center, located at 101 Mineola Boulevard in Mineola and will include a lecture and free screening. Please note that both women and men are welcome. Peripheral artery disease (PAD) develops when arteries in the legs become clogged with plaque - fatty deposits that limit blood flow to your legs. Left untreated, a person with PAD is at risk for serious complications, including heart attack and stroke. The program will begin with screenings starting at 6:30 PM, which will be held on a "first come, first served" basis, and will continue throughout the evening. The lecture will begin at 7:15 and will feature Alisha Oropallo, MD, Attending Physician in the Division of Vascular Surgery at Winthrop, and Peter Angelopoulos, MD, Attending Cardiologist at Winthrop. Dr. Oropallo will explain PAD and treatment options. Dr. Angelopoulos will discuss risk factors, symptoms, and how the disease affects your heart. A question and answer period will follow the lecture. Parking and the entrance are in the rear of the building. Admission is free, but seating is limited; refreshments will be served. Reservations are required. To reserve your seat, please call 1-866-WINTHROP. Winthrop is a member of Spirt of Women(r), a coalition of American hospitals and healthcare providers that ascribe to high standards of excellence in women's health, education and community outreach.
