G.C. 3rd Grade Lady Rams Have Fantastic Season

Sarah Kaval works hard to out run Northport and players.
The Maroon Girls 3rd Grade Lacrosse Team played their last game of the season at SUNY Farmingdale against Northport on the hot and steamy morning of June 7th. The game started out strong with 2 goals by Taylor Gladd and Meredith Aneser, and an attempted goal by Natalie Wilcox before Northport even knew the game had begun. Once they woke up, they quickly answered with two shots of their own, bringing the score to 2-2. After that, the Maroon girls came on strong, winning almost every ground ball and setting up an impenetrable defense. Face offs were taken by almost every girl on the team and coach Heaney moved all players from offense to defense regularly.

Taylor Gladd slammed another strong shot bringing the score to 3-2. After that, there was no stopping the team's offense. Shots fired by Margot Schroeder on an assist from Emma Wieland, Emma Wieland on an assist from Devon Heaney, Jacqui Brattan on assists from Delaney Sugrue and Julia Foxen brought the score to 7-2. Spectacular saves by Frances Brown, strong defense by Elizabeth and Caroline Tully, Meeghan Anneser and Elizabeth Scott kept Northport from scoring until the last 4 minutes of the game. All of a sudden, with only minutes to go, Northport's girls came on like gangbusters and Garden City began to show the effect of the heat and the strong running game they had played thus far. Despite their very apparent exhaustion, Kelly Donovan, Julia Foxen, Maura Mohann, Taylor Smith, Sarah Kaval and Devon Heaney kept running the ball downfield with textbook passes and lightning fast running, only to be intercepted by a well rested Northport. In rapid succession, Northport pulled off multiple unanswered goals bringing the score to 7-6. With minutes to go, Northport fouled the Garden City Maroon, and Margot Schroeder pulled the score up to 8-6 on a successful penalty shot. With a sigh of relief, the last whistle blew, ending an incredible season for all of the girls. Missing from the team that day, due to illness was Caroline Kaczynski.

Emma Wieland leads the pack after scooping a ground ball.
As was discussed many times on the spectator's bench, all of the girls learned a great deal this year. Their stick skills, throwing and catching, ground ball, scooping and overall teamwork, Tim Brown and Todd Brattan as well as the good luck of team mascot, Ella Heaney. With a final record of 7 wins, 2 ties, and 0 loses, the girls and the coaches have achieved a great deal this season while having an absolute blast.
