GC Scholarship Fund Winner

Jenna Kirschner
The Garden City Student Aid and Scholarship Fund is pleased to announce that Jenna Kirschner has been selected as the 2008 recipient of the Fund's Julia Maloney Scholarship. Jenna is the eleventh Garden City High School senior to receive this prestigious award made possible by a generous bequest of the late Julia Maloney, an elementary school teacher in Garden City for 47 years. The announcement of the award, in the amount of $3,000 per year for four years, was made at the annual Senior Awards Ceremony at the High School on June 2nd. Selection for the Julia Maloney Scholarship is based on academic excellence, character, service to school and community, a personal interview and an essay describing a teacher who has had a strong positive influence on the student.

In addition to her outstanding academic record, Jenna has been active in music, sports and club activities at GCHS. While she has studied piano, flute and piccolo, her prime musical interest is the bassoon and she has been the principal bassoonist for both the Wind Ensemble and the Symphonic Band. She merited selection for both All County Band and All County Orchestra. Her sport is volleyball and she has led both the JV and Varsity teams as captain. She has also served as manager, coach's assistant and official scorer for the Boys Volleyball team. Her school activities include serving as the editor of Lo Stivale, the Italian Literary magazine, the Italian Club, the Miracle Club and the GCHS chapter of the Jumpstart Foundation.

Jenna has received many awards for both academics and extracurricular activities, but the areas that mean the most to her both involve helping other students. She has been a long time volunteer with the Garden City Summer Enrichment Program serving as a Teacher Aide for elementary school aged children. She is also a Charter Member of Students Helping Students, a group founded to promote programs to improve student relationships and the atmosphere at schools throughout the Garden City School District.

In the fall, Jenna will be attending Georgetown University. We wish her every success in the years ahead.
