June 3rd Named Volunteer Firefighter & EMS Day

The New York State Assembly has declared June 3rd as Volunteer Firefighter and EMS day in New York State. The Assembly has adopted a resolution stating that "all volunteers, who give of themselves for the sake of their neighbors, are subjected to the rigors of extensive training. . . and provide protection for life and property . . .are to be recognized this day." The Assembly continues to recognize Volunteer emergency personnel "to give special recognition to those who work so assiduously for the betterment of their communities, and acknowledge publicly the heroic good works performed by the volunteers of this great Empire State."

The Garden City Fire Department is proud to have more than 100 volunteer firefighters who proudly serve Garden City day and night, 365 days a year. Garden City Volunteer Firefighters log thousands and thousands of man hours each year training and responding to various emergencies throughout the village. Volunteer firefighters are not only expertly trained in fighting fires, they are skilled in vehicle extrication (i.e. the Jaws of Life), hazardous materials incidents, carbon monoxide incidents, propane fires, natural gas emergencies, LIRR incidents, special rescue, and much much more. Volunteer firefighters in the village are your friends and neighbors. They are businessmen, lawyers, police officers, college students, electricians, contractors, accountants, stock brokers, teachers, and more, all serving the village proudly.

There are over 10,000 volunteer fire and EMS personnel in Nassau County alone operating in 71 fire departments. Volunteer firefighting is one of the highest forms of community service. If you ever dreamed of being a firefighter when you "grew up", well you can. Any village resident interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter can leave a message with the fire department at 465-4130 and a representative will contact you.
