Waldorf Seniors To Perform

Waldorf seniors will perform Love for Love by William Congreve for the greater community on Thursday, June 5 and Saturday, June 7 at 8:00 p.m.
At the Waldorf School of Garden City it is traditional for the entire graduating class-actors and non-actors alike-to entertain parents, friends and fellow students with a theatrical production in early June. This year's 23 seniors will perform Love for Love by William Congreve for the greater community on Thursday, June 5 and Saturday, June 7 at 8:00 p.m. in the school auditorium. Admission is free but there is a suggested donation of $5.00.

High school English and drama teacher, Mrs. Deirdre Burns Somers said, "This class is so much fun to work with not only for their vibrant personalities but also for the enthusiasm they bring to their work. I am happy to say that they have made Love for Love a labor of love."

Written at the end of the 17th century, Love for Love is a lightning-quick rapier-sharp comedic masterpiece of one of England's premier writers of Restoration comedy. Love for Love is an update on the tale of virtuous knights and modest ladies, excepting of course that the men lack virtue, and the women modesty. Comedic mix-ups, overzealous declamations of passion and hysterical about-faces in plot serve up this bawdy and deliciously sinful cake of a comedy.

The students put many aspects of their education into practice, particularly the sense of creative and community intelligence fostered by the Waldorf curriculum. An integral aspect of the school's curriculum and a long-standing tradition, every senior class has presented a play since the school graduated its first senior class in 1960. These plays have been exciting milestones and all students participate in them. Every student's experience at the Waldorf high school includes special "rites of passage" like the senior play to support the growth of skills and confidence. For these intense and comprehensive experiences, students help to select the work to be performed and carry out all aspects of the production.
