In Memoriam
Douglas A. Palmer Sr. passed away peacefully on May 1, 2008 at Blakehurst Nursing Home in Towson, Maryland at the age of 73 after a courageous two-year battle with brain cancer. He was surrounded by his wife, Arline and his three sons Douglas Jr., Scott and Craig. Douglas was born and raised in Hempstead, NY and graduated from Hempstead High School in 1951 and from Hofstra University in 1955, after which he worked as a computer programmer for Grumman Aerospace for several years while completing much of his Masters degree work in Mathematics and Computer Science. On August 2, 1958, he and Arline married at Grace Lutheran Church in Malverne and resided in Valley Stream until moving to Garden City in 1971. Douglas' notable contributions were recently acknowledged by the Long Island Cradle of Aviation Museum at Mitchell Field in Garden City as he was added to its "History Roll" for his contributions to the Gemini and Apollo space programs. Douglas then enjoyed a successful career in computer leasing and retired from Merrill Lynch as Vice President of Hardware Acquisions. After retirement, he and his wife Arline moved to Timonium, Maryland in 1997. Douglas was a devoted husband, father and Pop-Pop. He was an avid tennis player and reader who enjoyed boating and spending time on the beach with Arline and family at their summer home in Sag Harbor. Douglas was most proud of his family, especially his four grandchildren. Douglas is survived by his wife Arline (residing in Garden City), and three sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas Jr. and Kristin of Malverne, NY, Scott and Tina of Garden City, NY, and Craig and Jean of Huntington, NY. Douglas is also survived by his greatest joy, his four grandchildren Lauren, Cameron, Chase, and Kaylee. Douglas will be greatly missed for his devotion to his family and friends and for his endless wit and sense of humor. A memorial Service will take place on June 7th at 10 a.m. at the Garden City Community Church, Whitehall and Stewart Avenues, Garden City, NY 11530.
