Track Enjoys Senior Day

Maddie Adams and Lauren Williams listen to Mr. Cuzzo
For the girl's varsity track team it was a celebration of four extremely talented and popular seniors at the last home meet of the Spring season on Tuesday that helped GC dominate rivals Hewlett, Jericho and Lawrence. The seniors, Maddie Adams, Katy Daly, Brooke Senken and Lauren Williams were given a fine sendoff with a crushing 140 to 70 point victory over nearest competitor Hewlett. As is the custom with the team, Mr. Cuzzo bids a fond farewell to his seniors by describing to the team the impacts that they have had - and these four had many! Additionally, Ms. Fregosi prepares keepsake posters for the girls that are signed by the entire team. With all of the pre-meet hoopla completed, the girls went into the meet with big smiles and high expectations. Smiles were quickly turned to their normal competitive glares and the high expectations were greatly exceeded as the girls ran to a victory.

Highlights of the meet, and there were many, were some of the performances of the underclassmen who are preparing to step into the gaps created by the strong core of seniors. The best of the day was turned in by sophomore Emily Menges who won the 400m race in 57.7 seconds to set a new school record. Emily also finished second in the 3000m and long jump. Taking first in three events, freshman Michelle Rotondo won the 400m hurdles in 68, the 100m hurdles in 17.1 and the high jump with a leap of 4'10". And in the sprints, freshman Taryn Schmelzinger won both the 100m in 12.7 and 200m in 27.1.

The seniors enjoyed the day with terrific efforts of their own. Lauren 'Stick' Williams scored points in all three of her events by taking second in the 100 hurdles, and third place in the 400 hurdles and the triple jump. And Brooke and Maddie paired up and coasted around the track for 1500m taking first and second, and then came back in the 800m to again take first and second. While Maddie went on to win the 3000m and Brooke ran a strong leg in the 4x800 winning relay team.

The only down side to the day was the fact that Katy could not compete because of an injury suffered early in her leg of the 4x400 at the Penn Relays. And although she pulled a muscle, she still fought through it to finish her leg. And when asked why, her quick response was 'the team depended on me and I couldn't let them down'. Katy hopes to be ready to go for the division and county championships at the end of the month.
