Varsity Track At Seahawk Invitational

Victoria Chimento up and over the wall.
The Seahawk Invitational at Cold Spring Harbor last Saturday was run under some tough conditions with stiff winds and cold temperatures. But neither seemed to affect the GC girls as they competed at their usual high level. Two events in particular stood out on the day, the steeplechase and the pentathlon.

In the steeplechase GC had Maddie Adams, Molly Josephs and Victoria Chimento running the 2000 meter course over 6 hurdles, including the water jump. Maddie, the returning champ and meet record holder, dominated the field winning the event in 7:21, a new meet record. Maddie set the early pace and stretched her lead by more than 20 seconds over her closest competitor. Not their usual event, Molly and Victoria both finished the race with terrific times.

Throughout the day Michelle Rotondo and Taryn Schmelzinger competed in their first pentathlon's - five events that are a test of the versatility of the competitors. The two freshman not only held their own but Michelle took first place with a terrific score of 2724 points, barely missing the state qualifying score. While Taryn also medaled with a solid showing in all five events. The girls were exhausted at the end of the day when they finished their 800 meter run, having already long jumped, high jumped, hurdled 100 meters and thrown the shot put!

Laura Martens wins her 200m heat.
On the day there were several additional outstanding efforts as Alex Schlapp broke the sophomore meet record in the shot put. In the high jump Abby Hepworth tied for second with a jump of 4'8", Brooke Senken ran an outstanding 400 meters in 60.1, and Catherine Cafaro ran personal bests in the 200 and 400 meter races.

The team looks forward to wrapping up their divisional meets this week and then competing in the 41st Annual Loucks Games in White Plains today and tomorrow. Keep up the amazing work girls.
