Xtreme vs. Panthers

Shannon Tierney wins the ball
On Saturday, May 3 rd, the Xtreme hosted the Levittown Panthers. The Xtreme knew they were in for quite a battle. The Panthers are presently semi-finalists in the State Cup. Although the Xtreme have played some excellent soccer over the past 4 seasons, there was not a better display of teamwork then was during this match. Every player raised her level of the game to try to defeat the Panthers. Unfortunately, Levittown scored a heart-breaking goal with 1:30 remaining to win the match 2-1.

Although all the players did exceptionally well, hats off to our keeper Sam Derby and her back line of Alicia Mueller, Alison Holfester and Jenna Codignotto. Sam's goalkeeping was just spectacular. She made three point blank saves that looked to be for sure goals during the match. Whether tipping the ball over the top of the goal or covering her near and far posts, Sam was virtually unbeatable. Alison usually plays halfback, but in this match played center back. Alison did an awesome job covering her outside backs and taking the free kicks. Nineteen minutes into the first half, she scored a fabulous goal from a corner. Throughout the match, the fast and athletic Panther forwards had Alicia and Jenna under pressure. To the player's extreme credit, both showed relentless perservence and ability in stopping the forward's advancement. Alicia, Alison and Jenna dispossessed the Levittown players frequently and then put their team back on the attack.

Kelsey Whitney races to the ball
In the midfield, Sam Miesemer, Cara Adams, Katie Roscoe, Kelsey Whitney, Shannon Tierney and Colette Seel fought relentlessly and with great success for control of the middle third. With possession, the players got forward quickly, creating numerous scoring chances. Forwards Isabel McKeown, Lauren Miesemer and Joanna Sokolovic frequently used a series of combination passes to break through the Panthers back line. The Levittown keeper and defenders were under attack often, but held on to allow just one goal.

The Xtreme travel to New Hyde Park this Saturday to play the Lady Tigers.
