Socially Speaking Yes, I know it's May, even though we are having our April showers a bit late. Mother's Day will soon be upon us and I do hope that you are planning something special for Mother. Just about everyone is selling flowers that Mom can plant in her yard and enjoy all summer long so she will remember you and your thoughts of her too. Last year, in June, we had something unique in town and quite a few ladies and gentlemen took advantage of it. We had a Farmer's Market on Tuesdays just off 11 th Street in the parking lot of the old Social Services Bldg. It stayed in operation until Thanksgiving and it was wonderful getting really fresh produce locally grown and with such variety. I do hope that our Village will be graced by this again as many others are hoping for the same thing. It seems as if we should be hearing about it fairly soon. Keep your fingers crossed. No matter what happens on Election Day or for that matter who wins, the one thing that is certain is that there will be an Election Day Fair as usual. Christine Philippides has accepted the Chairmanship of the event and, knowing her, it will be well done and the success it has always been. The Election Day Fair at the Garden City Community Church is the place to be either before or after voting and we all look forward to it. May 22 nd will bring the luncheon that marks the close of the season for the Thursday Luncheon group - again at the G.C. Community Church. Make your reservations by calling the church office at 746-1700 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. by the 19th of May. Virginia Fortney will be presenting an exercise program for seniors that will take place in the Community Church Parlor. Vickie Stanco and Irene Torino will serve as hostesses on that day. Members and guests, bring your own sandwich and dessert. Coffee and tea will be provided. Margaret Delahunt did such a fine job as Co-President of the G.C. Branch of A.A.U.W. that she will now take on the position of Legal Advocacy Co-Chairperson. When you do a good job and like your organization, this is really a reward. Margaret always does a good job. Happy birthday wishes go to Bill Coffin, who will celebrate his special day on May 11 th (Mother's Day) and to Frank Tauches and Al Urban, who share May 12 th as their special day. May all these gentlemen have a wonderful day and a year filled with good health and much happiness, with a goodly number of years ahead. Happy wedding anniversary wishes go to May and Filippo Balboni. May they have many more years in which to celebrate health and happiness and many more years of wedded bliss. The Guild of St. Francis Hospital held its annual Luncheon and Fashion Show at the Marriott Hotel on May 1 st and they had a full house - 345 people attending. The prizes were fantastic and the fashions provided by the Americana, Manhasset were a delight to see. Among those attending were Jackie Polon and her sister Rosemary, and Rosalie Kelly among many others. A good time was had by all. The Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead's General Program Dept. and their Studio Dept. put on a wonderful production on Wednesday, May 7 th. Art work produced by the members of the studio was on display Wednesday after the program and all day Thursday. This is a wonderful show - open to the public free of charge each year and not to be missed. If you did not get there, make a memo to reserve the first Thursday in May in 2009 and you will not be disappointed. More next week. Adelphi University's Music Department held a musical week to start off the month of May. On Sunday May 4 th they presented an evening of scenes from operas and operettas and on Tuesday, May 6 th, the Adelphi University Chorus presented a delightful program of celebration. Their programs are open to the public and are given free of charge. Many Garden City residents attend them and some even perform in them. Enjoying one or both of these were Marilyn Flynn, Annemarie Gordon, Mary Polak, and Marye Heston. Do try them as I know you will enjoy. It's time now to honor and remember Mother, your Mother, Grandmother, Mother-in-law, or even a friend's Mother. I do hope that you will take the time to tell them how much they have meant to you over the years. Happy Mother's Day to one and all. See you next week.
