Waldorf Scores Well In French Poetry Contest

At the recent French Poetry Contest at Sanford H. Calhoun High School in Merrick, N.Y., students from the Waldorf School of Garden City gave an outstanding performance. Sophomore Anjali Kunnel received honorable mention for her recitation of "Mon Rêve familier" by Paul Verlaine and junior Alison McRae also received honorable mention for her version of "Elle avait pris ce pli" by Victor Hugo.
"Performers are judged on the correctness of their pronunciation and on their dramatic rendering of the poetry," said Waldorf's high school French teacher, Reina White. "We are incredibly proud of them. Trés Bien!"
The annual contest, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF), encourages both the recitation of previously published poetry and the composition of original pieces. This year, more than 100 students took part in the competition.
Chartered by the New York State Board of Regents and accredited by the New York State Association of Independent Schools and Association of Waldorf Schools of North America, the Waldorf School of Garden City is a coeducational day school with classes from nursery through twelfth grade. At the Waldorf School, students begin studying both French and German in grade one and continue in both languages until 8th grade. Beyond the evident goal of learning foreign languages, students develop a flexibility of perspective. In high school, students have the opportunity to choose French, German or Spanish.
