In 1935 the high school lacrosse teams at Garden City and Manhasset started a tradition that is still alive and well today. Back then, they played each other in a game that the Manhasset Indians won by a score of 9-0. It was the first time that these two teams met in what has become the longest and oldest continuous scholastic lacrosse rivalry in the nation and what is now known as the Woodstick Classic. The 2008 Woodstick was played at Garden City High School on Saturday afternoon April 26th. It was the 117th time the teams met and Manhasset opened the scoring with a first quarter goal but the Trojans fought back in the second quarter scoring four goals compared to one additional goal from the Indians. With a 4-2 lead going into the second half, Garden City added five more goals to bring the final score to 9-5. GC's Dan Savage scored a game high three goals. Francis McDonough added two goals and one assist. Other goals for the Trojans were scored by: Kevin Rose (three assists), Gavin Crisafulli, Will Fuller, and Tom Gordon with one each. Manhasset's Jeff Molinari, who made his first regular season appearance since suffering a concussion in the preseason, scored two goals. Ryan Clarke, Kevin Heenan and Connor English scored one goal apiece for the Indians. GC goalkeeper Brian McCullough made 10 saves. Manhasset's Jack Meyer made seven. Garden City has won 13 out of the last 15 Woodstick games played, but the Indians still lead the overall series 64-53. Next year Manhasset will host the 118th Woodstick Classic.
