Waldorf Senior Wins Poetry Award

Waldorf Senior Nicole Ortiz
On April 10th, students from throughout Long Island attended Adelphi University's annual Poetry Festival, which included workshops, a student poetry reading and a keynote address by Pulitzer Prize-winning Poet Natasha Trethewey. At the end of the conference, several students were singled out for poems submitted prior to the event. Waldorf Senior Nicole Ortiz received an "Excellence in Poetry" award for her poem entitled "Scriptures of My Life."

In a workshop lead by Ms. Trethewey, she discussed her use of poetry as a tool to reexamine and unpack institutionalized beliefs, historical monu-ments and cultural memories. "It was good for the students to see someone who has had success in the field of writing as well as to learn how important it is for creative work to pene-trate questions of history, culture and society," said Jennifer Dorman, Waldorf's creative writing club advisor.

Ms. Ortiz's poem will be published in the upcoming volume of "The Lyre," a journal of fiction and photography, produced by Waldorf's creative writing club.
