GC Attorney To Receive 'Education Partner' Award
Education's answer to the "Oscars," this award recognizes those whose impact on public education in Nassau County can be measured in very tangible ways. "Response to our 'Education Partner' awards program has been extraordinary," says Dr. James D. Mapes, Nassau BOCES district superintendent. "Through this innovative program, everyone who has ever been influenced by public education had an opportunity to show appreciation by nominating outstanding candidates for the award." During the nominating period, more than 1,800 people visited the Nassau BOCES Web site, which recorded 81 nominations for the award. "One of the nicest things about this program is that - just like Nassau BOCES - it is open to people from all walks of life," says Mapes. Gassman, managing director of Gassman, Baiamonte, Betts & Tannenbaum, P.C., founded the charitable organization WE CARE in 1988. WE CARE provides financial support for the Nassau County Family Court Emergency Fund. Using Kamp Kiwanis as a vehicle, WE CARE offers programs for underprivileged, psychologically distressed or physically handicapped children. Under his leadership, more than 100 scholarships for high school students have been awarded, and he has sponsored two minority Girl Scout troops and a Boy Scout troop for the physically challenged. In addition, Gassman is the driving force behind several specialized educational programs, including "Lunch with a Lawyer," "Mock Trials in the Classroom," "Students Arts and Letters Contest," and the "Student Mentoring Program." Gassman and the other 10 "Education Partners" will receive their awards at a gala dinner in their honor hosted by the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation on Thursday, May 8 at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury.
