Socially Speaking In a busy life there should always be time to think, to ponder, to contemplate and if you don't have something - a topic, a problem, or a thought, here are a couple of things that just might fill the bill. 1. If practice makes perfect, and nobody's perfect, why practice? 2. If it's true that we're here to help others, then what exactly are the others here for? 3. What is a free gift? Aren't all gifts free? 4. Why do people with closed minds always open their mouths? I'll give you a few weeks to mull these over before I give you any others. May will bring forth more flowers for us to enjoy, but at the Garden City Library Rose Pellicano will present "Flora In Our Midst" botanical paintings in a group show by some of her students. Rose has taught botanical art in the Studio Department of the Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead for ten years and has had many wonderful shows on her own throughout Long Island. Do come and enjoy this show and it might even encourage you to try it yourself. Good for you, Rose. The folks at the Garden City Country Club enjoyed something new this past week - a monthly gourmet dinner of four courses and with each month a different theme and wine included along with a choice of three different entrees. Enjoying the first dinner were Florence and Harry Keefe and Dr. James and June Kwee among a number of others. They were all licking their lips and looking forward to the next one when they left. I hear that the dessert was sinful - the best kind. The Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence will be holding their annual Spring Gala at the Garden City Hotel on Thursday, June 5th from 6:30 to 10 p.m. The honoree will be Christopher C. Giamo, metro president of Suburban NY/Conn. Commerce Bank. Chris has been named twice as one of Long Island's 100 Most Influential People by L.I. Business News and also serves on the board of directors of the Long Island Association. The coalition is supported by a number of residents of Garden City such as Joan Stafford and Muriel Urban. For more information call their office at 516-572-0700. Happy Birthday wishes go to Ada Kane, who celebrated her special day on May 1st and to Kathleen Maguire, who does ditto on May 9th. May both lovely ladies have a great year ahead filled with both health and happiness with many more to come. Happy Wedding Anniversary wishes go to Gloria and Arthur Mercante, who will be celebrating their 54th anniversary just about now. May they, too, have a great day with many more years of wedded bliss in their future filled with good health and much happiness. As I have often said, the ladies in this town plan ahead and the results are not only awesome, but very interesting. Joan Afflerbach has formed a committee of ladies who are members of the Community Club of Garden City and they are busy researching the history of the club for a presentation during the Fall season. Some of the committee member are Bea Mercadante, Gerry McHugh, Marye Heaston, Carolyn Kaiser, and a number of others. So far, they are finding many interesting things during their research that will be both enlightening and entertaining for members. This is a program not to be missed. Good for you, Joan and your committee. The ladies aren't the only ones doing something new - the guys are doing it too. Specifically, the Retired Men's Club in town is thinking of doing a luncheon/dance in place of their very popular co-ed cocktail party. Building on the success of that function, the dance will be possibly held at The Stewart Manor County Club. If comes about, you fellows had better polish up on your dancing, but don't worry - a new twist on the venue does not mean you will have to learn the Twist. Tax time has come and gone, that is for income taxes, but this statement puts a new light on them. Did you ever notice that if you put the words "The" and "IRS" together it spells "Theirs?" It won't be long before the pool applications come in the mail and then you know that summer will be close behind. See you next week!
