"The Female Athlete: What You Need to Know" Winthrop-University Hospital will offer a free program, "The Female Athlete Triad: What You Need to Know," on Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at 7:00 PM. It will be held at the Winthrop Community Outreach Center, located at 101 Mineola Boulevard, at the corner of Second Street in Mineola. The program will highlight the health-related consequences that can occur when female athletes and active women fail to achieve a balance between diet and exercise. Sports and exercise are part of a healthy lifestyle. However, some girls and women who play sports or exercise intensely do not balance the needs of their bodies and their activities. Mark Grossman, MD, Chief, Division of Sports Medicine at Winthrop, will discuss the Female Athlete Triad, three potentially serious interrelated health problems seen in female athletes and active women: disordered eating, menstrual disorders and weak bones. Attendees will learn the risk factors, the consequences, and how athletes can avoid damaging their bodies. A question and answer period will follow the lecture. Parking and the entrance are available in the rear of the building. Admission is free, but seating is limited. Reservations are required. To reserve a seat, please call 1-888-53-WOMEN. Winthrop is a member of Spirit of Women(r), a coalition of American hospitals and healthcare providers that ascribe to high standards of excellence in women's health, education and community outreach.
