Xtreme Extinguish The Blaze

Kelsey Whitney races to the ball
Last Saturday the Garden City U-11 Xtreme hosted the Massapequa Blaze at St. Pauls. With a relentless defensive effort, the Xtreme held the talented Massapequa team to one shot on goal in 60 minutes. Deanna DiPierro and Cara Adams both scored brilliant goals and the Xtreme won the match 2-1.

Right from the start of the match, the Xtreme distributed the ball in a timely and accurate fashion. Lauren Miesemer, Joanna Sokolovic and Isabel McKeown had the Blaze defense under immediaate pressure by playing their teammates in on goal. Cara, Katie Roscoe and Shannon Tierney got forward quickly, adding problems for the Blaze back line. After 15 minutes of an offensive assault, the Xtreme scored the first goal of the match. Forcing Massapequa to concede a corner kick, Deanna DiPierro took the corner and incredibly bent it into the goal. Full of enthusiasm, the Xtreme continued to dominate the half. Sam Derby was in goal for her team, taking charge of the defense that denied any major threats on goal.

The start of the second half had Kelsey Whitney, Alison Holfester and Colette Seel in at midfield. This group continued to win the battles for possession in the middle third and they kept the play in the Massapequa defensive end. Fourteen minutes into the half, Colette got the ball and carried it to the corner. She sent an awesome cross to a sprinting Cara. Cara one timed the ball into the net for a goal. Up 2-0 with 16 minutes left, the Xtreme fans were feeling good. Unfortunately, about five minutes later, the Blaze's only shot on goal went in after a mad scramble in the Xtremne 6 yard box. So again, the pressure was on the backs, Alicia Mueller, Sam Miesemer, Sam Derby and Jenna Codignotto and the second half keeper, Shannon to hold the lead. Whether tracking down the Massapequa forwards or taking the ball out of the air, the Xtreme deffense shut down the Blaze to secure the victory.
