Girls 6th Grade Grey Lacrosse Team Defeats Lido The girls got off to a quick 4-0 lead at a freezing cold 5:30pm game. All four goals were scored on unsettled situations. Katie O'Neill, Caitlin Mahland, Jackie O'Hare, and Annie Blanco provided the fire power. Caitlin's goal was assisted on a nice feed by Jackie Marino. Lido scored on a possession granted by the good sportsmanship rule but Garden City answered right back with Caitlin scoring her second goal. After a timeout by Lido, their players came out with a renewed spirit. Lido would beat Garden City to some critical ground balls and used unsettled situations to score two more goals before half. GC led 5-3. The 2nd half saw a great all around play by both teams. The zone defense used by both teams proved difficult to beat as the cold and the wind prevented crisp passing and catching. Garden City's defense was anchored by Kristen Noonan in goal who had 4 nice saves on the day as well as defenders Molly Adams, Nicole Chtchekine, Sara Ruhl, and Regan Marooney. These four girls have made tremendous improvement on zone defense and the necessary communication that needs to take place to be successful. The athletic midfield play on both teams led to the teams trading goals right down to the last minute. Haley O'Hanlon would start the goal rotation by both teams on a well placed shot. Shannon Callahan would score the last 2 goals as Garden City won a hard fought game 8-6. The girls 2nd win was fueled by superior shape, a desire for ground ball pick ups, and their ability to pick up the most dangerous scoring threats from Lido in unsettled situations.
