Adelphi Welcomes Parenting Expert

John Grienenberger, Ph.D.
Adelphi University's Institute for Parenting is proud to host John Grienenberger, Ph.D., who will present "What is Reflective Parenting and How Can it Help My Child?," another addition to the Parent Coffee Series on Thursday, May 8, 2008, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., in Adelphi's Alumni House, 154 Cambridge Avenue, Garden City, NY. An interactive Q&A session will follow. Parents and community members are encouraged to attend. The registration fee is $10.

Reflective Parenting is unique to human beings. It is the ability to reflect upon your own inner emotional world and that of your child's. Reflective parents use this "reflective" ability to understand their child's thoughts, feelings, intentions, and needs. This ability helps parents "make meaning" of their child's behavior and allows a parent to effectively respond to the subtle, often nonverbal cues that are important in interpersonal relationships. In addition, reflective parent-ing can strengthen the parent-child relationship and help the child develop emotional and behavioral self-regulation or "elf control". The informative workshop will examine how to comprehend your child's feelings and what might cause your child's actions. The discussion may increase your knowledge of how to manage your child's be-havior, and much more.

Dr. Grienenberger is the co-director and founder of the Reflective Parenting Program at the Wright Institute in Los Angeles and Vista del Mar, California, and the New Center for Psychoanalysis in Los Angeles, California. He has authored numerous papers, presentations, and training programs in the areas of attachment research, reflective functioning, parenting, and child psychotherapy research. He has a private practice in West Los Angeles and works with infants, children, and adults.
