Socially Speaking

With Athena
I've said it before and I'll say it again, and probably again. You can take the resident out of Garden City, but somehow, you just can't take Garden City out of the resident. Case in point! While ordering two books from the book store manager at the Winterthur Museum in Delaware, I found that she knew just where I lived here in town as she had lived here for a long time and her children went to the schools here. She was most helpful and asked many questions about what was happening here. Her name is Barbara Hentschel and she asked to be remembered to anyone who knew her from that time. She also said to come on down and see all the new things that have been done on the grounds and in the buildings. I might just do that. How about you? It's a great place for families.

Speaking of historic places, do plan to attend the aviation lecture at our very own Garden City Historical House on Sunday, April 20th at 3 p.m. It will be all about the history of Mitchel Field and aviation in Garden City. While you are about it, consider their consignment Shop on Tuesday, Thursday. or Friday from 10 to 4, and Saturdays from 12 to 3 for that special Wedding, Anniversary, or birthday gift. This is our very own Historical Society so do support them please.

It's spring and moe than the robins came back to town. This is prime time for nominating committees to present their slates of officers for our many clubs in town. Marilyn Schmachtenberg chaired the Nominating Committee for the Ladies Auxiliary of our American Legion Post. Joan Nedelka has been selected as President. Pauline Rudkin as 1st Vice President and Rose Forgione as 2nd Vice President. We all know that they will do a great job.

The Nominating Committee for the Garden City Branch of A.A.U.W. presented its slate of officers for 2008-09. Sylvia Ebert and Gerogene Harrison Co-Presidents, Joan Stafford and Diane Wall will be Co-Vice Presidents for Program, while Mary Knox will serve as Vice President for Membership and Alice Cammiso will serve as Vice President for its Educational Foundation programs. Another job well done.

The Garden City Country Club held its monthly Dinner/Bridge on Wednesday, April 2nd. Enjoying the dinner were Marie Kelly, Pat Dalton, Grace Murphy, Doris and Werner Forster, Janet and Bruce Littlejohn, Mary Gagliardo, and Florence Dieterich among others. Unfortunately, no Slams (either Small or Grand) were made that evening so it will be better luck next time. Bridge Chairlady, Muriel Urban, announced that the next date would be Wednesday, May 7th. She should have said to be sure to have your lucky cards next time.

Speaking of bridges, it's not too soon to get your table together for the annual Geranium Bridge that will be held at Cathedral House on Thursday, May 8th from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Mrs. Elinor Rees will be accepting reservations at 763 Emerson st., Uniondale, N.Y. 11453 at $15 per person.

Happy birthday wishes go to Louise Abitable, who will celebrate her special day just about now. We wish you all the best in the coming years with nothing but good health and much happiness in the year to come.

Happy anniversary wishes go to Melissa and Tom Bradley, who will celebrate their special day on April 17th. May you have many more years in which to enjoy health, happiness, and each other.

The icing on the birthday cake at this time goes to Howard Otte, who will be celebrating his 99th Birthday on April 11th. What a milestone and he plays a good game of Bridge, too. May you have a grand day and enjoy it with friends and family. How about everyone sending Howard a birthday card on this special day even if you don't know him, it's a real milestone.

There has been a movement to reduce the number of plastic bags that we all collect from supermarkets and other stores. Do you know that it takes 1,000 years for them to decompose in a landfill? I have noticed several people now bringing cloth bags to the supermarkets to be used again and again so as to reduce the use of the plastic ones and have even started doing that myself. Try it, they are standard practice in Europe.

Have a good one and I'll see you next week.
