GC Cyclones Win Season Opener

The GC Centennial Club's newly formed girls high school division intramural soccer team traveled out to Lindenhurst last Sunday evening where it played its first ever Suffolk Soccer Interleague (SSI) match and came away with a 3 to 0 victory under the lights, and in frigid conditions, against a very good Lindenhurst Fire team. The Cyclones put on an awesome display of team oriented soccer as all 17 players used crisp passing, timely shooting and steady goaltending to take a one goal lead late in the first half and then extend the lead to three goals midway through the second half. Even as the sun set and the outside temperatures dropped into the 30's, the team remained focused and controlled play to finish its first game strong with a well-deserved W. Next up, the Cyclones will be hosting its first SSI game when the Farmingdale Flames travel to GC on Sunday, April 6th (12:30 @ Stewart).

SSI, based in Suffolk County, is the largest intramural Interleague soccer program on Long Island with over 47 clubs and 350 teams playing a full eight to nine game spring schedule of competitive friendly intramural soccer matches. The Centennial Club formed this new Interleague team as an extension of the intramural program in order to allow high school aged players to continue to play soccer at the age appropriate competitive level, without the commitment level of the Travel program.
