With Athena
We only have one more day in March as I write this and then comes April. Both of these months had sayings about them when I was a child and those sayings had some meaning to them. They were "If March came in like a lion, it went out like a lamb or it could be just the reverse." It does seem that this year it not only came in like a lion but went out like one too. The saying for April was that April showers brought May flowers and I am eagerly looking forward to that. Somehow, it seems that the forsythia and the daffodils are just a tad slow this spring, but sometimes memory fails. So far spring has been a bit colder this year. We all have to have a little patience - it will come.

Members of the Garden City Branch of A.A.U.W. will be busy when April rolls around. Joan Stafford will be chairing the Branch meeting on Monday, April 7 th at 7:30 p.m. with a program "One Woman's Journey - From India to Long Island" by Naginder Singh a 30 year resident of L.I. While a high school teacher in India, she became a social worker on Long Island. Members and guests are welcome to attend. Then on April 10 th, Rose Ann Palmer will chair the public policy group of the branch with a discussion of Clean Elections. The basis is from England where the government gives each qualified candidate the same amount of money to run their campaign. This saves their taxpayers millions of dollars and results in the Clean Campaign. Way to go!

Don't forget to get your reservations in for the Helen Keller Spring Dessert, Card and Games Party on Thursday, April 17 th from noon to 4 p.m. at the G.C. Community Church. Donation is $12 per person. Mrs. William Vinciguerra of 85 Hayes Street, G.C. is taking the reservations.

There are wonderful people who volunteer in this town to make life better for so many but many of them are unsung. Sally Richmond was recognized this past week at a county-wide affair for all the branches of the American Association of University Women for her years of service to her Garden City Branch and for all her innovative ideas and just plain hard work for the branch. Another branch member was with her - Julie Fehler It is not only the members of her branch that should be proud of her, but the entire Village. My hats off to you, Sally, and all those who do volunteer work.

Joan Kuster and Edith Trestik will be hostesses for the Tuesday, April 8 th Reader's Circle at the Garden City Community Church. The book will be "Broken" by William Coper Moyers , a former resident of this Village. They will meet at 12 noon and it sounds very interesting.

Also at the G.C. Community Church, its popular Thursday luncheon group will have its first meeting for April on the 10 th. Valerie Ignaowitz and Pegi DeGraff will be hostesses for the whole month. (Another wonderful service provided for members and residents).

Happy birthday wishes go to Doris Forster, who will celebrate her special day on April 2 nd, and to Jim Adelman, who will do likewise on the 4 th of this month. May you both have a wonderful day and a year filled with both health and happiness with many more to come.

It was with sorrow that we read of the passing of Helen Ehman this past week. A resident for 58 years, Helen was also a wonderful volunteer in so many aspects of the life here in Garden City. Winthrop Hospital honored her for her work there and the members of the Long Island Choral Society will never forget her meticulous work in keeping track of the singing membership through many years of service. In the Community Club she was a long time member of their Music Department, always happy to serve in any capacity in any of her organizations. She gave both service and joy to all who knew her and she will be missed by all.

May you all have a wonderful week and may the sun smile upon you until next week.
