Auditions For High School For The Arts High school students from Nassau and Suffolk counties with dreams of becoming actors, dancers, playwrights, painters, sculptors, directors, singers or even lighting designers are encouraged to audition for the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA). Part of the public school system, LIHSA is conveniently located at a state-of-the-art facility in Syosset where students in grades 9-12, have the opportunity to attend either a half- or full-day program. Teens who exercise the half-day option spend part of the day at LIHSA and the remainder of their time in their home district completing academic requirements. Students who elect the full-day option complete all criteria for obtaining their Regents diploma at LIHSA. A broad spectrum of opportunities is available to students interested in studying the arts. A staff consisting of practicing professional artists prepares the students for auditions, helps with portfolio selections and steers students toward specialized awards and honors. The class of 2007 received over $8 million in scholarships and grants, and are now students at some of the most prestigious colleges and universities, including Parsons School of Design, Berklee College of Music, Cornell University, Fashion Institute of Technology, The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Quinnipiac University, The School for Film and Television and New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. Auditions are being held now through June. Interested students entering grades 9-12 for the 2008-2009 school year are encouraged to speak to their schools' guidance counselors about their interests in LIHSA. For more information on the school, call Principal Ava Favara at 516-622-5678 or visit www.lihsarts.org.
