Girls Track At The NY State Championships

Michelle, Brooke, Liz and Maddie - the 4x800 medal winners.
Several members of the Garden City girl's track team represented Nassau County Section VIII at the NY State Track and Field Championships at Cornell University last Saturday. Taking the trip up to Cornell and running in the championships were Maddie Adams, Brooke Senken, Elizabeth Slattery, Michelle Rotondo, Molly Josephs and Jenna DeAngelo. Emily Menges also qualified but could not attend.

Maddie was pulling double duty and running in the 1500m race as well as in the 4x800 relay. On the relay team with Maddie were Brooke, Liz, Michelle and Jenna, while Molly was going after the gold in the 1500m race walk. The girls were scheduled to run their races on Saturday morning but had a training session at Cornell on Friday night. At the training session the girls were joined by new mascot Penelope (see the photo), and were a hit with the other teams that ran by them while working out.

Once the meet began, the girls didn't disappoint. They represented the Kelly green shirts of Nassau County, and Garden City HS, well by delivering medal performances. Molly bested her own school record for the race walk with a time of 7:16.81 finishing fourth, only 4 seconds off the lead. What a tremendous performance for Molly, especially when you consider she is only an eight grader. Great job Molly!

In the 4x800 relay, Liz, Michelle, Brooke and Maddie brought home a medal with a solid sixth place finish. Their time of 9:29.63 was just 2 seconds off of a third place finish.

And in a very competitive 1500m race, Maddie just missed medaling with a seventh place finish with a personal best and school record time of 4:44.74.

The girls enjoyed their trip upstate, even with it being more than a 5 hour trip each way. Coaches Erica Fregosi and Tom Skrivanek joined the girls at Cornell and were proud of their strong showing. They now look forward to competing at the Nike Nationals tomorrow and Sunday with an even larger contingent from Garden City.

Representing GC in Maryland will be State qualifiers Maddie, Brooke, Slats, Michelle and Molly. They will be joined in Maryland by Emily Menges, Lauren Williams, Katie Reilly, Taryn Schmelzinger and Tara Mahon.
