Sparks Capture 5/8 Girls GCAA Basketball Championship

In the GCAA Basketball 5th to 8th grade girls division, Monday night's championship game came down to a battle between the regular season's #1 ranked team, the Stars, coached by John Mixon, and the second-place Sparks, coached by Mike Falco. Coach Mixon has been sidelined for the last few weeks in the hospital, so the coaching duties for the Stars fell to Rich Carpentier and Dorothy Montgomery.

The first half was a very tight contest with each team trading baskets and executing extremely well on defense. The Stars came out of the first half leading 12 to 8, but the Sparks were right on their heels. At the start of the second half, however, the Stars turned up the heat on the defensive end of the floor and quickly ran off three fastbreak baskets produced by their smothering man-to-man (or girl-to-girl) D. The game ended with the Stars on top, 25 to 10.

This was the best, most highly attended season on record for the GCAA 5th to 8th grade girls. Every week the teams showed up with close to a full roster of players and were ready to compete. All teams should be very proud of the talent level and commitment we experienced this year.
